While it’s easy to assume that geek rock band Weezer got its name from the classic nerdy inhaler trope, the band’s moniker derived from a childhood nickname Rivers Cuomo’s dad used to call him. And yet, the band has always embraced a sort of geeky, tongue-in-cheek approach to their music. Songs like “Thank God for Girls” exemplify those awkward, vulnerable thoughts that make it all the more endearing. And it doesn’t stop there.
Just like Buddy Holly has his trademark, thick-rimmed glasses, so does Cuomo. Much of the band’s style reflects a kind of nerd cool aesthetic—which makes this shirt featuring glasses so fittingly Weezer. Geek chic is in and even if it wasn’t, take a cue from their lyrics, “I don’t care what they say about us anyway. I don’t care ‘bout that!”
